Clothilde Matta est une actrice, photographe et vidéaste plasticienne française née en 1991. Nourrie par une formation initiale de comédienne, sa pratique artistique entretient un rapport étroit aux arts vivants et en particulier à l’engagement du corps. C’est dans la tension toute théâtrale entre séparation et continuité, des corps et des esprits, que se déploie son imagerie. Le désir, comme quête de continuité et reconnaissance de la séparation des êtres, y prend une place centrale. Ce désir érotique, qui prend volontiers la forme d’images - ne serait-ce que par le fantasme - caractérise aussi bien l’amour charnel que l’amour des mystiques. Exploration des possibilités de communion offertes à l’être, aspiration nostalgique à l’unité, le travail de Clothilde Matta investit l’indémodable terrain de la condition humaine en jetant des ponts entre les cultures et les époques : Europe, Asie, antiquité, modernité, sacré et profane y sont rapprochées sous le sceau commun d’une humanité avant tout désirante.
Son travail prend naissance au cœur de l'intime, que ce soit par le lien qui l'unit avec son sujet ou son modèle. Son histoire personnelle se mêle à des histoires universelles, des événements qui l'ont marquée ou intriguée. Ses sources d'inspiration s'ancrent dans la mythologie, les événements religieux et l'Histoire. Son regard se porte vers les détails souvent non explorés. En confondant le réel et l'imaginaire, ses images réveillent les méandres de notre mémoire intime. C’est une recherche poétique sur le désir, la beauté et le mystère de l’existence. Son travail tisse des liens entre le divin et le terrestre, entre l'invisible et le tangible. Elle s’intéresse particulièrement à la dualité sacré et profane en cherchant les points de convergence là où ces deux mondes se rencontrent, se chevauchent et s'influencent mutuellement. Ses images explorent les espaces intermédiaires, les seuils subtils qui isolent ou unissent. La nudité devient un langage, un moyen de transcender les limites de la matérialité pour accéder à une dimension spirituelle.
En 2018, elle expose ses photos à la Galerie Modern’art à Versailles. La même année elle est lauréate du Young Talents Photo Prize de la foire fotofever et lauréate du prix du public grâce à sa série Jealousy of Matter exposée au Carrousel du Louvre. En 2019, elle est invitée à Kyoto par Wacoal pour une exposition personnelle dans le cadre de Kyotographie, où elle présente pour la première fois sa série Transfiguration. Elle bénéficie également d'une exposition personnelle à la Galerie 15 à Toulon et participe au YOUMEIN festival 2019 à Tanger, soutenue par l'American Legacy pour sa vidéo ELLES, Tanger en binôme avec la réalisatrice Nina Cholet. En octobre 2019, elle présente leur travail en avant première à la Maison Européenne de la Photographie durant la FIAC puis à Nice lors du festival OVNI. En Septembre 2021, elle présente son second film ELLES, Rome et participe à Kyotographie avec le projet ELLES, soutenue par la MEP en raison de la saison de la France au Japon lors de l’exposition Women Artists from the MEP studio : New perspectives in film and photography from France. Elle propose également dans le cadre de la collaboration la MEP x MADE une sélection de tirage en édition limitée. En Août 2022, elle est résidente à La Chapelle Saint Antoine , résidence d’artistes située sur l’île de Naxos en Grèce. En juillet elle participe à l’exposition collective Les Fleurs du bal soutenue par le studio KSBP, avec une installation immersive , sonore et visuelle inspirée du texte Combray de Marcel Proust et de son voyage au Japon en 2019. Son travail est publié dans la revue Internationale EXIT basée à Madrid en avril 2023. Elle poursuit son travail sur le corps sacré et le corps profane et developpe sa série “ In the mirror” qui recense environ 70 autoportraits réalisés depuis 2012. Elle travaille actuellement sur un livre d’artiste.
Clothilde Matta is a transdisciplinary artist. She uses photography, video, text and voice. She followed a double training in Fine Arts and Theater. Through a sense of detail and sensual and poetic images, she brings out a language of hybridization and diversity by questioning female desire. The off-camera is just as important as what is shown, it is a work on the strength of fantasy. The unspeakable sacred exists thanks to the profane flaw it chooses to show, thus causing order or chaos. In her work, the notion of the mystic is always present, whether in the light that reveals the subject or hides it, and in a search for the appearance or disappearance of bodies.
Her works with the intimate, whether through the connection she shares with her subject or model. Her personal history intertwines with universal stories, events that have marked or intrigued her. Her sources of inspiration are anchored in mythology, religious events, and history. Her gaze is directed towards often unexplored details. By blending the real and the imaginary, her images awaken the intricacies of our intimate memory. It is a poetic exploration of desire, beauty, and the mystery of existence. Her work weaves connections between the divine and the earthly, the invisible and the tangible. She is particularly interested in the duality of the sacred and profane, seeking points of convergence where these two worlds meet, overlap, and mutually influence each other. Her images explore the intermediate spaces, the subtle thresholds that isolate or unite. Nudity becomes a language, a means of transcending the limits of materiality to access a spiritual dimension.
In 2018, she exhibited her photos at the Galerie Modern’art in Versailles. The same year she won the Young Talents Photo Prize at the Fotofever fair and won the public prize thanks to her ‘Jealousy of Matter’ series exhibited at the Carrousel du Louvre. In 2019, she was invited to Kyoto by Wacoal for a solo exhibition as part of Kyotographie, where she presented her ‘Transfiguration’ series for the first time. She also benefits from a solo exhibition at Galerie 15 in Toulon and participates in the YOUMEIN festival 2019 in Tangier, supported by the American Legacy for her video ELLES, Tanger in tandem with the director Nina Cholet. In October 2019, she presented their work in preview at the European House of Photography during the FIAC. In September 2021, she presented her second film: ELLES, Rome and participated in Kyotographie with the ELLES project, supported by the MEP (Maison Européenne de la Photographie) due to the Season of France in Japan during the Women Artists from the MEP studio exhibition: New perspectives in film and photography from France. As part of the collaboration MEP x MADE, she also offered a selection of limited edition prints. In August 2022, she became a resident at La Chapelle Saint Antoine, an artist residency located on the island of Naxos in Greece. In July, she participated in the collective exhibition "Les Fleurs du bal," supported by the KSBP studio, featuring an immersive, auditory, and visual installation inspired by Marcel Proust's Combray and her journey to Japan in 2019. Her work is published in the international magazine EXIT, based in Madrid, in April 2023. She continues her work on the sacred and profane body, developing her series "In the Mirror," which includes approximately 70 self-portraits created since 2012. She is currently working on an artist book.
